HIMALAYAN NATURE
Himalayan Nature is an international research and conservation institute that undertakes scientific research on diverse aspects of Himalayan flora and fauna and its environment. It is an independent, not-for-profit civil society organization working actively on the timely topics, burning issues and cases where biodiversity is related with poor people's livelihood. At present it is working to establish a data system on the vertebrates of Nepal with an aim to future monitoring of their population trends. The wide geographic coverage for the organization's work includes northern parts of India, Nepal and Pakistan, entire part of Bhutan, southeast Tibet and also the northern side of Myanmar.
Himalayan Nature is a science-based organization and takes an independent view of conservation issues. It offers advice over aspects of sound environmental management to government body and other concerned nature conservation organizations. It aims to release its work on a periodical basis to make the public and policy makers aware of the environmental situation.Himalayan Nature is supported by internationally renowned scientists who have a long experience on the natural history of Himalayan region. It works closely with other research and conservation organizations to complement their work and for exchange of data. Currently it is based in Kathmandu and has a field study centre in the eastern part of Nepal, at the edge of Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve and in Lumbini, Rupandehi district, west central Nepal. One more study centre, at Chitwan is proposed to cover central Nepal. It also aims to establish a centre in the high Himalayas and currently is in a process of negotiation with landowners. Objectives
The main objectives of Himalayan Nature are to:
- Prioritize and implement biodiversity conservation programs that provide tangible benefits to local people and improve their living condition
- Conduct scientific and participatory research on flora, fauna and ecosystem dynamics
- Promote meaningful participation and awareness of local people in biodiversity research and conservation
- Foster dialogue, networking and partnership among local, national and international stakeholders to deal with biodiversity issues at landscape level.
